The Cambridge Open tournament had an excellent entry of 259 players with players ranging from 8 and under through to 18 and under and coming from all around the country.
Local players who had an excellent week were Aisha Brown, Kira Reuter and Maki Zivotic. Aisha Brown won both the girls 16 and under and 18 and under titles beating Kira Reuter in the final of each. Kira has been out of action for over 14 months due to injury and made a fantastic return to competition and looked in terrific form which is good for the future.
14 year old Aisha beat Kira 7/6, 6/3 in the 16 and under final and had an equally good match in the 18 event when Aisha won 7/5, 7/6. Both matches were extremely well contested with lots of hard hitting from the baseline and both girls showing some great retrieving skills.
In the boys 16 and under event Maki Zivotic from Peterborough reached the final before falling to Ed Pomeroy from Suffolk 3/6, 6/7 in another fiercely competitive match. Vincent Chen also reached the boys 16 and under semi-finals.Maki also reached the semi finals of the boys 18 and under event before falling to Toby Cutting 10- 8 in the third set match tie break. Dom Lea also lost in the semi final to the eventual winner Max Darrington from Suffolk.
In the younger age groups Seth Newman from Newmarket had a terrific tournament and won the boys 10 and under age group beating Jakob Bonnett from Peterborough in the final 0-4, 4-1, 10-3.
Sophie Tjurinic reached the girls 9 and under semi-finals and finished third overall.
Charlotte Laing reached the girls 12 and under semi-finals. Sama Malik, who is making good progress reached the 14 and under semi-finals before losing to the eventual winner Lucy Hull 6/7, 3/6. Sama teamed up with sister Chaaya to win the 14 and under girls’ doubles.
Referee Sue Rich said ‘It was an excellent week and the girls results certainly showed encouraging signs for the future of Cambridgeshire County Teams. There were some very competitive matches and played in good spirits.’
