The annual event at Corby Tennis Centre attracted 7 counties this year with Corby entering an 8th team. Cambridgeshire sent a team of Dougie Mckee, Ted Hope, Ganesh Mullaparthi and Sophie Tjurina.
The event was split into 2 boxes of 4 teams with the top 2 teams progressing to the semi’s. Cambridgeshire started against Warwickshire and after losing the first set in each match, both Dougie and Ted came through to give Cambs a 2-0 lead. Sophie and Ganesh followed suit by losing the first set again, but Sophie kept her cool and won in 3 sets to give us the match 3-1.
In the second round robin match, Cambridgeshire easily defeated Buckinghamshire 4-0 with all the players playing exceptionally well.
It came down to Cambs v Corby to top the group. Dougie and Ted again won 2 close matches against high quality opponents, and Ganesh narrowly lost in 3 sets to draw the match 2-2. The result meant we topped our group.
Cambs faced Nottinghamshire in the semi finals. It was a very tight affair, with Dougie losing to a national player and Ted winning a great match to leave us 1-1. Ganesh won his match in 3 sets and Sophie was narrowly defeated in 3 sets to leave the score at 2-2. Unfortunately Notts went through to the final due to winning more sets in the semi final.
Cambs 3rd place playoff was against Corby again. Dougie played superbly to win his match again, and without luck Cambs lost the other 3 matches, all in 3 sets with only a few points separating the players.
Overall Cambridgeshire came 4th in a very strong tournament which was ultimately won by Hertfordshire. It was very pleasing to see each player improve each game and play some great tennis in tight matches.
