East Area AEGON Champions Cup

The inaugural East Area Champions Cup took place over the weekend of the 20 and 21 June 2009.

Successful clubs from 8 East counties who had won their respective age groups in AEGON Team Tennis were invited to play in the Champions Cup to determine an overall winner in the 8 & Under (Red), 9 & Under (Orange) and 10 & Under (Green) events.

Congratulations to the following clubs in Cambridgeshire who made it through to the Champions Cup;  Huntingdon TC (Red and Green, girls), David Lloyd, Cambridge (Orange) and Great Shelford TC (Green, boys).

There were a total of 96 players from Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Northamptonshire and Suffolk who competed over the two day event which was held at Culford Tennis and Sports Centre in Suffolk. The standard of competition was extremely high with some very close matches.

In the Red event Huntingdon TC (Cambridgeshire) finished runners up against Riverside LTC (Bedfordshire) in a closely fought battle. All 8 counties were represented. EA Tennis (Norfolk) reached the semi-final stage.

David Lloyd, Ipswich (Suffolk) were too strong for Riverside LTC (Bedfordshire) and won the 9 & Under Orange title. 7 of the 8 counties were represented in the Orange event. David Lloyd, Cambridge (Cambridgeshire) and Easton College Tennis Centre (Norfolk) both reached the semi-finals.

Although a number of rain delays interfered with the boys and girls 10 & Under Green events, they were successfully concluded thanks to Culford’s new indoor courts. Culford TC (Suffolk) were victorious in the boys event while Gosling (Hertfordshire) won the girls event.
