Cambridgeshire’s U10 boys and girls tennis teams played in the AEGON County Cup event between Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk over the weekend of 6 and 7 June 2009.
The Cambridgeshire’s U10 girls team comprising of Abby Hanson, Anna Traherne and Millie Kennedy played some fantastic tennis at Riverside TC in Bedfordshire. They narrowly lost to Essex in a tie-break shoot out to finish second overall. In a nail biting finish to the day, Abby and Anna needed to beat the Essex double partnership of Lauren King-Sparke and Maryam Williams to be in with a chance of ending the tournament in first place. Playing short sets, they won 4-2, 5-3, setting up the tie-break shoot out. Unfortunately Essex emerged victorious, winning 10-7 in the tie-break decider.
The boy’s team comprising of Matthew Mitcham, Lui Murton and Rory Dixon played some very competitive tennis at Hills Road Sports & Tennis Centre in Cambridge beating Suffolk and Bedfordshire to end the day in third place. Once again the final standings were decided on a tie-break shoot out when Essex and Cambridgeshire finished their match level after the singles and doubles’ matches. Matthew and Lui took on the Essex pair of Tommy Smalley and Calum Ward in the shoot out, losing 10- 5, leaving Essex in the second place slot behind Norfolk.
