Cambridgeshire girls finished a very creditable second place in the Aegon 10 and under County Cup at Riverside Club in Bedfordshire over the weekend.
The team were without top player Kira Reuter who was on holiday and then the second string player Anna Loughlan was ill on the Sunday and unable to play. However the remaining players, Ellie Coleman, Aisha Brown and reserve Abigail Callaghan played their hearts out to ensure Cambridgeshire finished second overall to Norfolk.
On the Saturday Cambs beat Suffolk by 8 points to 0 with Anna Loughlan, Ellie Coleman and Aisha Brown winning all their singles and then Anna and Ellie winning the doubles. Cambs then had a really tight match with Essex with Ellie Coleman and Aisha Brown winning the singles but Anna Loughlan losing at number one and then Anna and Ellie lost the doubles leaving the match at 4 points each. Due to the weather the doubles was held over until the Sunday when Ellie had to pair up with Aisha Brown as Anna Loughlan was ill and they played magnificently to win the tie break shoot out 10 – 8.
On the Sunday Cambs beat Bedfordshire 8 point to 0 with Ellie Coleman, Aisha Brown and Abigail Callaghan all winning their singles and then Ellie and Aisha winning the doubles. Unfortunately without Kira and Anna Norfolk proved too strong in the final match and despite some good play the Cambs girls were unable to secure any wins and so finished second overall.
Captain Sue Meadows was very proud of the team and said it was a great team effort especially on the Sunday without the two leading players.
