Cambridgeshire boys 10 and under team of Marcus Witt, Charlie Taylor and Harry Wendelken came back strongly on day 2 of the County Cup to finish a very creditable third in their Group.
There were 5 Counties in the Group Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk and each County played every other County over the weekend. Each match consisted of 3 singles matches and 1 doubles match. Short sets were played and sudden death deuce.
The boys faced very strong opposition on the Saturday against Essex but nearly got off to a flier as number three Harry Wendelken played exceptionally well but lost very narrowly to Essex number three 4/2, 1/4 8 – 10. Essex number one and two players were too strong for Marcus Witt and Charlie Taylor. In the second match against a strong Suffolk team Harry Wendelken again made his opponent fight hard but again lost 2/4, 3/5. Charlie Taylor had a tough match against the Suffolk number two going down 4/2, 2/4 7 – 10.
On the second day the Cambs team had a very good win against Norfolk with Harry setting the tone winning his match 4/0, 4/2. Charlie lost in the third set tiebreak and then Marcus turned his match around after losing the first set 2/4 to win 2/4, 4/0 and 10 – 3 in the tie break. Harry and Charlie then went onto win the doubles 4/2, 4/0.
In the final match of the day Cambridgeshire played Bedfordshire. Harry lost in the third set tiebreak 10 – 5, but Charlie came good and won 5.3, 4/2 and then Marcus won 5/3, 4/1. Harry and Charlie then won the doubles 1/4, 4/2 and 10 - 5 in the tiebreak.
Sue Rich Team Manager and on court coach Jimmy Morris were pleased with how the boys fought back on day two.
