On the Saturday, the boys played their 1st match against a stronger Bedfordshire team than normal and Cambs got of to a great start with Derrick Chen winning 4-1 4-0 before Zac Cox succumbed 1-4 1-4. Vicente needed a win to put Cambs 2-1 up with just the doubles to play and it came down to the wire with Vicente winning a close match 5-4 4-2.
Cambs had to play the singles against Norfolk before the doubles was to be played at the end of the day and again Derrick Chen played some fantastic tennis to win 4-0 4-0 before Zac Cox lost a very close and tight match 4-2 2-4 (8-10) to Reagan Bessey. Vicente Castillo couldn't get another win and lost a match tiebreak 0-4 4-1 (6-10) to leave Cambs 1-2 down with the doubles to play.
Leon Kewney and Zac Cox played doubles against Bedfordshire while Vicente and Derrick played against Norfolk. Both matches were very close and tight but Cox and Kewney winning 5-4 4-2 to give Cambs the win against Beds.
In the other doubles against Norfolk, Chen and Castillo won the doubles 4-1 5-3 to tie the match at 2-2 meaning a straight doubles shootout match tiebreak to 10 points. This tiebreak was a much tighter affair, with the Cambs team getting in to an early lead 8-3 up before Norfolk battled back to 8-7. But it was Cambridge's day with Chen playing some wonderful passing shots to make it a win for Cambs and two for the day winning the tiebreak 10-8.
It meant going in to the Sunday with two wins out of two and in a good position, although the tough match against Herts will be the key.
On the Sunday, Cambs got off to a good start with Derrick winning 4-2, 4-1. Vincente fought hard, but lost 4-0, 4-0 to a very strong Herts no.1, leaving Zac still on court to battle for the deciding singles. After losing the first set 4-1, Zac staged a spirited comeback to take the second set to a tie- break, but despite his great efforts lost the match.
With the tie still alive, Cambs had to win the doubles. Derrick and Vincente played fantastic tennis to win the first set 4-1. The Herts pair fought back though to win the second set 4-2, and then kept up their momentum to win the third set tie- break 10-5.
This meant Herts had won the group, but it was a great effort by the Cambs boys to challenge them all the way.
In the last match Cambs played a Suffolk team who had found their form after losing both their Saturday matches. Vincente played first, and put in a good performance to beat Suffolk's number one 4-1, 4-2. Derrick won easily 4-0, 4-0, again leaving Zac as the last player on in another close fought match. After losing the first set 5-3 he won the second 4-1, but again just lost out in the tie-break.
With Zac and Leon losing an entertaining doubles 4-1, 5-3, this time Derrick and Vincente were not able to find their form in the shoot out, meaning that Suffolk had won the match.
Despite this disappointment, Cambs had done enough to finish as runners-up, which was a fantastic team effort in a very close group!
