Cambridgeshire Lionel Cox Team

Cambridgeshire finished in their highest position in the Lionel Cox Trophy for many years by finishing joint 3rd with Norfolk.

The event took place over the weekend of 2 and 3 May and saw the top U10, U11 and U12 players from the 8 East area counties battle it out at Queenswood School in Hertfordshire. With over 150 of the best players from 8 counties it was an excellent weekend of tennis.

Cambridgeshire's achievement was a great team effort as they were missing their two highest ranked players, Josh Wilson and Zoe Douglas who were playing in the U14 County Cup.

The U11 and U12 boys teams were both runners up in their age groups. The U12 boys team were looking for their 3rd consecutive trophy after the team had won the U10 and U11 boys event for the last two years. This year they came just short losing 2-1 to Suffolk but Ben Clark, Kian Ahayee and Jake Lipschitz gave a galliant effort.

The U11 boys lost out to a very strong Hertfordshire team losing the final 3-0, but beat both Essex and Norfolk to reach the final. The team lost their no. 1 player Toby Huffer through injury for the final day so it was up to Ryan Storrie, John Taylor and Dominic Lea to try and beat the favourites Hertfordshire.

The U11 and U12 girls gave it their all but came up short against more experienced opposition. Cambridgeshire struggled to find a 3rd girl for both of these teams as there is a limited number of girls who are playing competitive tennis in the county. It was a similar situation last year and therefore Cambridgeshire need more girls to start picking up a racket and start playing.

Overall there was some fantastic tennis played over the weekend and it was great to see such a good team effort and everyone who played should be proud of themselves for finishing joint 3rd.
