Cambridgeshire’s team of 10 and under, 11 and under and 12 and under players had a fantastic weekend at Queenswood School to finish third overall in the Inter County Lionel Cox Trophy. This competition sees the best 10 and under, 11 and under and 12 and under players from the Counties of Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Northamptonshire, Norfolk and Suffolk compete against each other. There are 3 girls and 3 boys in each team in each age group and they compete against the other Counties initially in two boxes and then wherever you finish in the box you play the opposite number from the other box. If you finish first in the box then you are competing for first and second place; if you finish second then you compete for third and fourth and so forth. The total positions are then totalled for all the teams together to give an overall winner.
Cambridgeshire’s result was an overall team effort and everybody should be congratulated on their contribution and support for each other.
Pride of place goes to the girls and boys 11 and under teams who both finished second in their respective age groups. The girls 11 and under team of Kira Reuter, Anna Loughlan and Abigail Callaghan were so close to winning with the final match poised at 1 match each but they narrowly lost the final match 10 – 8 in the third set tiebreak to Herts. Earlier they had beaten Norfolk 3 match to 0; Bucks by 2 matches to 1 and Northants by 3 matches to 0.
The boys team of Alex Wardley, Charlie James and Sam Clark beat Bedfordshire by 3 matches to 0; Herts by 2 matches to 1 and Bucks by 2 matches to 1 and also reached the final and again narrowly lost to Essex by 2 matches to 1.
In the 12 and under event the girls team of Lizzie Pam, Anna Traherne and Millie Kennedy finished a very good third, They lost to Herts in their first match by 2 matches to 1 with only Lizzie winning but then managed to win all their remaining matches, They beat Northants 2 matches to 1, beat Bucks 2 matches to 1 and Bedfordshire 3 matches to 0. Well done to Lizzie for fighting so hard and winning all her matches.
The boys 12 and under team of Lui Murton, George Laing and Rory Dixon had a hard time but managed to beat Norfolk to finish 6th.
In the 10 and under event the girls team finished a very good third. The team of Aisha Brown, Ellie Coleman and Molly McDonald lost their first match to Bucks 2 matches to 1 and then won all their remaining ones beating Essex 2 matches to 1; beat Beds 3 matches to 0 and beat Herts 3 matches to 0 = very good team effort.
The boys 10 and under team of Vincent Chen, Marcus Witt and Harry Wendelken finished an excellent fourth. They beat Norfolk 2 matches to 1; lost to Suffolk 2 matches to 1 and then beat Bucks 2matches to 1 but unfortunately Vincent Chen was injured in this match and so unable to play the final match against Herts which Cambs lost 2 matches to 1.
