U14 Girls County Cup Report

Monday, May 16, 2011

A team of Zoe Douglas, Pippa Scotcher, Lizzie Pam and Lauren Watson- Steele played in the under 14 girls county cup event at Eastgate tennis Club Lincoln (group G )

On the first day we came up against a strong Sussex team. The day began with Lauren losing a tough 3 set match and Lizzie + Pippa also suffering defeats, Zoe then produced an excellent battling performance at number 1 to make it 1-3 after the singles. Zoe and Lizzie then made it 2-3 with a 7-6 7-6 win at 1st pair doubles but unfortunately Lauren + Pippa lost out to a strong 2nd pair to make the overall score 2-4. Sussex did go on to beat the other two counties 6-0 so this result was no disgrace.

On day two we had a very tight match versus the home county Lincolnshire. Lizzie gave the team a great start with a very solid and professional performance at number 3. However we then found ourselves 1-3 down with Lauren, Pippa and Zoe all losing hard fought matches. So the girls really needed to produce something special in the doubles. At 1st pair Zoe and Lizzie worked really well as a team and showed some real fighting spirit when needed. A 7-5 7-6 win now made the tie 2-3. At 2nd pair Lauren and Pippa knew only a win would give us a chance of getting a result. And after some great tennis they managed to get a well-deserved victory by winning (10-6) on a match tie break. The match was now level at 3-3 so a count back was needed, firstly on sets then on games. What a result, we won by 2 games! A very nail-biting end to day 2.

The final day saw us come up against Buckinghamshire, Lizzie played a good match at number 3 and with Lauren coming from a set and 5-0 down to win (what a great effort) we were 2-0 up. Pippa then lost out to a strong opponent at number 2, but with Zoe winning her match comfortably we were 3-1 up after the singles. Zoe and Lizzie then secured victory with a good doubles performance at 1st pair to make the tie safe at 4-1. Unfortunately we lost at 2nd pair so the overall score was a 4-2 win, which insured we came 2nd in the group.

Well done to all the girls, for a great effort over the weekend, it was a pleasure to be the captain of such a hardworking and well behaved team.
