Cambridgeshire Ladies (Group 2B) are celebrating promotion to Group 1 following last weekend’s tennis championships.The team was: Lisa Whybourn, Sophie and Anneka Watts, Laura Oates, Alice McGee, Zoe Douglas, Alice Taylor, Stella Gordon. Having been handed the home advantage, Cambs wasted no time in getting their campaign off to a bright start.
In Friday’s opening match against East of Scotland , Alice Taylor Zoe Douglas, Alice McGee, Anneka & Sophie Watts and Lisa Whybourn all won their singles matches, Doubles wins from Taylor/ Douglas and Oates/Whybourn completed an 8-1 victory.
On Day 2 Cambs defeated South Wales 6-3
Singles’ wins coming from Alice Taylor, Zoe Douglas, Anneka Watts and Alice McGee. Two doubles matches were won by, A.Watts/McGee, Douglas/Taylor ,
On the final day Cambridgeshire cruised to a 5-0 lead over Lancashire . Singles wins came from Alice Taylor, Zoe Douglas, Alice McGee and Anneka Watts. Laura Oates won a decisive third set thus obtaining the 5th and winning rubber, The remaining matches were abandoned
South Wales had beaten East of Scotland 5-2.
The Cambridgeshire team were so pleased to win the group . Congratulations to them all. Everyone played exceptionally well. Enthusiasm and commitment to gain promotion was evident throughout the weekend. In 2011 Cambs. lost a 3rd set match tie break thus preventing promotion to the ’premier group’.
Cambridgeshire now look forward to next year’s championships which will be played at the excellent sporting facilities of Bath University.
