Boys 10 & under team come first at Corby!

Monday, November 03, 2014

Cambridgeshire boys and girls 10 and under teams played at Corby on 2nd November in the second round of the 12 Counties team event.

Following the success of the 12 and under girls and boys last weekend who both finished first it was the turn of the youngest age group.

Cambridgeshire initially had a strong boys’ team but Felix Dean pulled out at the last minute and thankfully Charlie Adams was able to fill his place. Leading by example at number one was Yujiro Onuma who played very well winning all his matches. He got the team off to a flying start beating Albert Sitwell of Northampton 4/2, 4/0. Next up saw Tension Prempeh beat Joseph White 4/1, 4/2. Charlie Adams started off very well against Guy Wilkinson but lost his way and narrowly lost 4/1, 2/4, 3-10. This meant Jamie Jefferys had to win at number four which he duly did beating Edward Lewis 4/1, 4/1 to give Cambridgeshire a 3 matches to 1 win.

The girls’ team of Weiqi Ye, Sarah Thomas and the Borcoski twins Sammy and Eloise had a tough match against Northants with only Sarah Thomas winning beating Lilli Trimble 4/1, 4/2. Weiqi had a really close match to tie the overall score but lost to Isobel McDonald  2/4, 4/1, 8-10.

Next up were Oxfordshire. Again Yujiro got the team off to a good start with a convincing 4/0, 4/0 win over Sebastian Muller. Tenison Prempeh then lost to Edward Alder 2/4, 0/4 and Charlie Adams again after a promising start just lost to Rafe Llewellyn 4/0, 2/4, 9-11. This meant Jamie Jefferys again needed a won to draw the match. Jamie played very well and beat Luke Perkins 4/0, 4/2 to tie the match overall at 2 rubbers each.

The girls all lost to Oxfordshire with Sarah Thomas having the closest match against Holly Craig.

In the final match the boys needed to beat Norfolk to win overall. This was a tense match with Yujiro again winning at number one beating Barnaby Taylor 4/0, 4/1. Charlie Adams lost his match 3/5, 1/4 while at the same time Tension Prempeh was a set down to Gabriel Overton but dug deep and won the second set 4/2 and then played a marathon match tie break where he trailed 1-4 before eventually coming through to win 12-10. This was a key moment in the overall match. Jamie Jefferys then won his third match against Thomas Abbott 4/1, 5/3 to give Cambridgeshire another win.

The girls drew with Norfolk with Weiqi Ye beating Elissa Wood 5/4, 4/0 and then Eloise Borcoski getting a walk over in her match.

Overall in the boys event:

  1. Cambridgeshire
  2. Northants
  3. Norfolk
  4. Oxfordshire.

In the girls event:

  1. Oxfordshire
  2. Northants
  3. Norfolk
  4. Cambridgeshire.

With two of the 5 age groups played Cambridgeshire are currently in top position with 13 points; Northants on 11 and Norfolk and Oxfordshire on 8 points each.

A good team effort and still three age groups to play – keep up the team spirit Cambridgeshire!
