The County Closed was played at the Cambridge LTC in excellent weather conditions and produced some exciting finals and new champions.
Pride of place goes to Sama Malik and Zach Cox who both won 2 singles titles and Zach added a doubles to his trophy cabinet as well.
In the boys 14 and under singles Zach beat Yujiro Onuma in a quality final with lots of hard hitting rallies 6/4, 6/7, 10-4.
In the 16 and under finals he upset the top seed Sam Clark 6/4, 6/4 in another very close match. Zach then paired up with Leon Kewney to take the 14 and under doubles title beating top seeds Yujiro Onuma and James Murphy 6/1, 3/6, 10-7 in perhaps the best doubles match of the tournament.
In the girls events Sama Malik beat sister Chaaya in the 16 final 6/4, 7/5. Chaaya after a long injury has now regained her form. Sama also won the 18 and under girls singles against the much improved Charlotte Laing 6/3, 7/5. Aisha Brown who was the top seed in the 18s had to withdraw due to injury.
Chaaya Malik won the girls 14 and under singles beating Laurie Cruickshank 4/6, 6/3, 10-4.
There was a new champion in the 18 and under boys’ singles as Nick Ghaznavi beat Sam Clark 6/2, 6/4.
The Men’s Open was won by top seed Ben Clark, who is studying in America, who beat Charlie James 6/3, 6/1.
The Ladies Open was won by Thalia Martin after Aisha Brown retired in the final with injury.
The younger age group titles were won by two aspiring players. Rohan Iyengar upset top seed Yujiro Onuma 6/4, 2/6, 10-7 in the boys 12 and under final while the hard hitting Weiqi Ye won the girls and 12 and under title.
Ganesh Mullaparthi took the boys 10 and under titles beating Sam Slater in the final.
The 9 and under boys event was won by Sam Slater and the girls event by Rezi Onibere.
The 8 and under boys event was won by Leo Runciman and the girls event by Florence Pritchard-Gordon.
Well done to everyone who took part and keep the Cambridgeshire flag flying for 2017.
