A day at The Championships, Wimbledon

On the 4th July 2012 six West Heath juniors, Tanner and Keean de Villiers, Phoebe Ecuyer-Dale, Theodora Enslin, Amelia Monteith and Jamie Smith, got up very early and, with Di and Melinda in tow, boarded the train to Wimbledon. Below is an interview with Theodora about her day;

What was the best bit of the day?

The guided tour of Wimbledon by a very nice lady.

Where did they take you?

They took us to centre court, which was huge, and to number one court. We went to the place where the friends and family sit and watch, and we walked down the tunnels.

We saw the man who’s job it is to go through every blade of grass checking that they’re the correct type. The lady told us that pigeons poo on the courts and the seeds in their poo are the wrong kind of grass for playing on.

Did you see anybody famous?

Yes, I saw Serena Williams playing on the practice courts and her dad being interviewed.

What did you do after the tour?

We went to the play area and measured the speed of our serves. I sat on a very wobbly umpire’s chair.

Did you see any matches?

We saw the number one ladies doubles pair in the world and sat on Murray mount and saw some of Murray’s match against Ferrer. The screen was enormous.

Did you get a souvenir?

Yes, we went to the stringing room and I was given a piece of Andy Murray’s old string!
