KENT INTER SCHOOLS TENNIS COMPETITION 2013

The finals of the Kent Inter Schools Tennis Competition were held on Friday 28 June 2013 at the Tunbridge Wells Lawn Tennis Club. This was the fourth year that the finals were held at the club, which once again proved to be an excellent venue for staging the finals of this annual schools’ tennis competition. For the first time in a number of years, the day was affected by wet weather and this resulted in the afternoon boys’ matches having to be restricted to just one set for the Intermediate and Senior finals.

The finalists in both the boys and girls competitions were again of a very high standard.  By staging the finals at an old established tennis club, this has not only provides a show case for schools tennis, but has also fostered the club - school link, which is an important aspect in the development of the game.

In the competition this year Sevenoaks School had their best year in the history of the competition by winning all five of the finals they reached. In the girls’ competitions, Sevenoaks won the Junior Girls competition against Sutton Valence. In the Intermediate Girls, Sevenoaks beat Kent College Canterbury and in the Senior Girls competition Sevenoaks beat Maidstone Girls Grammar School.  Congratulations to Pat Morecroft for producing winning teams in all three girl’s finals.

In the boys’ competitions, Sevenoaks had their best year to date, by winning the Intermediate Boys competition against Sir Roger Manwoods and the Senior Boys final against Kings Canterbury. The Judd School and Harvey Grammar contested a very close match, with Harvey emerging as winners by 27 games to 23 after drawing on sets.

In the competition this year there were 61 entries from 18 schools which involved 244 students playing competitive tennis, with the finals at the Tunbridge Wells Lawn Tennis Club to whom, on behalf of the Kent Schools, I wish to send thanks.  Kent LTA supports this competition by providing balls and trophies for the finals and without this support the competition would not be able to continue.
