This weekend is an important one for our Men’s and Ladies’ county teams, who as in the highly successful Summer, have highly contrasting ambitions in the Aegon Winter County Cup. Based at Southampton, our Men will be fighting hard to retain their hard-earnt status in Division 3, whilst our Ladies will be trying hard to climb out of the bottom division 6B at nearby Redbridge.
The Men face a tough task without both Myles Orton and Matthew Hough, but hopefully the faith put in the youngsters last year will pay off as they aim to stay. Inspirational captain Jeremy Cowley will lead from the front followed by Paul Midgley, James Ling, Ben Smith, Dom Hemy, Ryan Lambert, Rohan Abel and newcomer 16 year-old Bernard Cessar Toreggianni, a young, determined team that will fight to win every point against Hampshire, Cheshire + Dorset.
An understrength Ladies’ squad face the Channel Islands, Northamptonshire and the South of Scotland, and they have been hit by the unavailability of Amanda Keen, Kitty McWhirter + Lily Campbell-Lamerton, three key players who made a significant contribution when promotion was enjoyed at Felixstowe in the Summer. The team will be chopping and changing each day, but will comprise sisters Kari + Holly Sherington, captain Katie Tassell and fellow experienced “veterans” Louise Rogers, Janie Taylor + Emma Elsom.
Adding some new blood, they will be joined by the talented junior Ella Monsey, who will in fact play as number one, the up and coming 14 year-old Georgia Harris and the 12 year-old Harriet Petley, all of whom will greatly benefit from the experience. Hopefully many of our Suffolk supporters will make the short drive up the A12 sometime over the weekend and give our Ladies all the encouragement they will need to make that crucial climb out of the bottom division.
