Help Bristol Celebrate the Commonwealth Games

Thursday, March 13, 2014

The West of England Sport Trust (Wesport) in partnership with Bristol City Council are looking for volunteers to help with the celebrations planned as part of the Queen’s Baton Relay’s visit to Bristol on Tuesday 3rd June 2014.

The Queen's Baton Relay is the traditional curtain-raiser to the Commonwealth Games. By the time it arrives in Bristol the baton will have visited 68 nations and territories and covered almost a third of the world’s population. The baton contains a message from the Queen to the Commonwealth that will be read out at the Opening Ceremony of the Glasgow Games.

As part of the Queen’s Baton Relay’s visit to Bristol, Wesport are organising a ‘Sport’s Park’ where members of the public will be able to come down a try a wide range of sports for FREE. The park will be based on the Bristol Harbourside and Millennium Square and will be a fantastic celebration of sport and physical activity in Bristol. The park will also have music and dance performances making it have a real carnival atmosphere.

To make this happen, Wesport are looking for an army of volunteers to help bring to life this once in a lifetime opportunity. These volunteers will receive training and support prior to the event to help them make this an enjoyable experience for the public and themselves.

Hannah Davis, Wesport’s lead for the Queen’s Baton celebration said:

"’This is a wonderful honour for Bristol to host the Queen’s Baton Relay, and its success relies heavily on an enthusiastic volunteer workforce, who will form the backbone to the event.

To make the most of this opportunity, we are urging the members of the public to donate a few hours of their time throughout the day or evening, to help with a variety of roles, from assisting National Governing Bodies run activities within the ‘sports park,’ to welcoming and assisting schools take part in the Inclusive Watersport competition at Bristol Docks, which will welcome the baton’s arrival into the city.

If you are interest in volunteering at the Sport’s Park organised by Wesport please visit www.wesport.org.uk/qbrvolunteering. From here you can register your interest in becoming a volunteer and find out more information. Equally you can contact Hannah Davis via email: queensbatonrelay@wesport.org.uk or Telephone 0117 328 6259.

Like the Games Maker volunteers from London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games, events like these cannot be possible without your support, so please do get in touch before Friday 25th April 2014, if you are keen to be involved in any capacity."
