Local players shine in the Cambridge Open Tournament

The Cambridge Open Tournament hosted at Cambridge LTC last week attracted an entry of 264 players and several local players finished as winners in a highly successful tournament which again shows how the County Juniors are progressing.

Sama Malik, who plays at the Cambridge Club won the 18 and under girls singles beating top seed Aisha Brown 7/5, 6/4 in a very well contested final. Sama also reached the Ladies Open final before losing to Cambridge University student Kadi Liis Saar 1/6, 4/6. Sama also contested the 16 and under final but narrowly lost to Lincolnshire’s Angela Halton in a tight three set match 6/4, 1/6, 5-10.

Lydia Sivirentsava, seeded 4 from St Neots won the girls 14 and under event beating second favourite Laurie Cruickshank 6/0, 6/3 in the final.

The girls 12 and under event was won by Leicestershire’s Emily Pollard who beat Cambridge Club player Gabriella Zailer-Fletcher, who was unseeded 6/1, 6/1 in the final but had played extremely well to reach the final.

The girls 10 and under event was won by Shami Ndoro of Essex but the girls 9 and under winner was another Cambridgeshire player Rezi Onibere from Huntingdon who beat Nottinghamshire’s Sophie Lager 7/5, 7/3. 

In the boys events the Open was won by Leicestershire’s Roman Kenny- Manning who always seems to play his best on his trips to Cambridge!

Aaron Lee of Middlesex won the boys 18 and under event and Ben Feltham of Herts won the 16 and under event.

Darius Fatemi-Ghomi from Cambourne won the boys 14 and under event to add more local success beating top seed Haadi Shah from Suffolk in a very good display of aggressive hitting 6/3, 6/3 in the final.

Nottingham’s Phoenix Weir won the boys 12 and under event.

Jayden Durham (Norfolk) beat Jonny Cross  from Cambridgeshire in the boys 10 and under event 4/2, 4/2 in the final.

There was more local success in the 9 and under event as Cambridge Club’s Zack Tabaczynski won this event beating Henry Brice (Suffolk) 7/6, 5/7, 7/3 in the final.

Vincent Fletcher beat Bibiana Kroll in the mixed 8 and under final and both come from Cambridgeshire.

It was an excellent week of tennis and referee Sue Rich was delighted with the entry and all the local successes and thanked the Cambridge Club and it’s committee for hosting the event.
