U18 County Cup 2016 - Boys - Group 3b - Liverpool

Friday 26th February

Cambridgeshire vs West Scotland

Lost 0-9

A tough day for the boy against a very solid West Scotland team. Hoverer the score didn’t give a totally fair

reflection on the days play as many of the matches came down to small margins and were very competitive.

A point here and there and the tie would have become far more scoreline competitive. John Taylor and Dom

Lea had hard fought matches losing in close sets, full of break point opportunities and half chances, but

unfortunately coming up just short. The same could be said for Charlie James, losing in a third set tie-break.

The doubles and Cambridge showed their classy play, at times blitzing past their opponents. Most

noticeably John Taylor and Alex Wardley, who played very disciplined and clinical doubles in winning their

first set 6-2, only to lose three sudden death Duce points in set two, to drop that and lose on a match

tiebreak. Similarly, Josh Wilson and Maki Zivotic couldn’t get the right side of three 1st set sudden death

points.

Saturday 27th February

Cambridgeshire vs Lancashire

Lost 2-7

Another day full of challenges, this time against Lancashire. The first two wins of the weekend came from

Dom Lea in a great battle against Joshua Taylor, and Jan & Maki in the doubles against Ross Watson & Tom

Dillon. Coming back from a set down, Dom fought through a match of ups and downs, but Dom’s fight and

hustle, alongside with fantastic team support came through. Jan and Maki put on a fantastic display of

clinical doubles, from point one until the end they didn’t put a foot wrong and came out deserved easy

winners. Other performances of note came from John Taylor losing out in a tight 3rd set 7-5 and Josh, who

came in for Jan in a straight swap at number 5, who played in a very high quality and entertaining match,

just falling short. Alex and Charlie both struggled to get going in their singles and Harry fought through a

very tough match against the big 18 year old Ross Watson. So the loss to Lancashire leaves the boys in a

straight shootout with Essex on Sunday to remain in division 3.

Sunday 28th February

Cambridgeshire vs Essex

Lost 3-6

The final day and the relegation battle between Cambs and Essex. The closest of the 3 matches and a very

hard fought day that saw the match tied 3-3 after the singles. A very disciplined win from Josh at number 4,

and battling 3 set wins from Harry and Charlie - both coming from a set behind. Maki, John and Dom all lost

in closely contested matches that could have gone either way. The doubles was a closely contested event,

Jan and Maki at pair 1 losing in a champions tie break, and John and Alex losing out in a close 1st set. The

end result saw Essex take all 3 doubles and with it the match. A challenging weekend for the boys team,

great attitude and fighting spirit from all, but up against strong opposition and not quite coming out the right

side of close situations, so the weekend ended up in relegation.
