Cambridgeshire team battled in Lionel Cox Competition

Thursday, May 10, 2012

Sixteen of the county's best 10, 11 and 12&Under  tennis players battled for Cambridgeshire in the Lionel Cox Trophy held last weekend at Queenswood School in Hertfordshire.

Three boys and three girls played in each age group against teams from the seven other counties in the East Region.

In the boys events, the 10&U  team of James Murphy, Isaac Rowles and Harry Forber won their first match against Norfolk, but then lost to Essex, Northants and Bucks to finish 6th.

The 11&U team of Marcus Witt, Charlie Taylor and Harry Wendelken also won their first match against Norfolk, but suffered two narrow losses to Suffolk and Bucks, before defeating Bedfordshire comfortably in their last match to finish 5th.

The 12&U boys, Alex Wardley, Charlie James and Sam Clarke, did well to finish 4th, defeating Bucks and Beds, and losing to Herts and Suffolk.

In the girls event, the 10&U team of Chaaya and Sama Malik and Natasha Scott won both matches on saturday against Norfolk and Beds, before losing on Sunday to Essex and Herts, finishing a creditable 4th.

The 11 and 12&U team were not able to put out all of their strongest players because some of them were playing up for the U14s in the County Cup, and were also hit by injuries.

Both teams were reduced to only two players just before the event, but the 11s team of Aisha Brown and Molly McDonald did well to defeat Suffolk in their first match to finish 6th.

The 12&U team of Abigail Callaghan and Melissa Carney battled hard in their matches, finishing 8th, but playing well.

Overall, Cambridgeshire did well to finish 5th out of the 8 counties.
