Cambridgeshire girls miss out on 14 and under finals at Newquay

Thursday, May 21, 2015

Cambridgeshire girls team of Aisha Brown, Ellie Coleman, Natasha Scott and Sama Malik travelled to Newquay to play in the Aegon 14 and under County Cup over the last bank holiday weekend.

There were 6 Counties competing in this division and the Counties divided into two group of three. Cambridgeshire had Channel Islands and Devon in their group and the other group had Avon, Cornwall and South Wales.

After an 8 hour trip down on the Friday the girls played the Channel Islands on the Saturday. Despite an initial rain delay matches eventually got under play around lunch time. Natasha Scott got the team off to a good start beating Lauren Smeed 6-1, 6-1 and this was followed by Sama beating Molly Webster 6-1, 6-1. Number tow Ellie Coleman beat Antonija Sokic 6-2, 6-2 and then Aisha Brown beat Natasha Forrest 6-0, 6-1.

In the doubles Sama and Natasha beat Molly and Lauren 6-2, 6-4 but the top pairing of Aisha and Ellie narrowly lost 6-0, 2-6, 2-10 but Cambridgeshire won overall 5-1.

On the second day Cambridgeshire played Devon and recored another good win. Natasha Scott got the team off to a winning start beating Teya Sheppard 5-7, 6-1, 10-4. Sama Malik easily won her match 6-2, 6-1 against Josie Culliford. Ellie Coleman had a great battle against Emily Syms and narrowly lost 4-6, 6-2, 7-10. In the top singles Aisha Brown had a hard hitting match against Beth Cooper and won 6-4, 6-2. In the doubles Sama and Natasha beat Josie and Teya 6-0, 7-5 and then Aisha and Ellie beat Beth and Emily 7-6, 6-2 to give Cambridgeshire a 5- 1 win.

This meant Cambridgeshire won their group and then played the winner of the other group which was Avon on the Monday.

Avon players, except the number one were all rated higher than the  Cambridgeshire team so we were up against it.

In the first match Natasha Scott lost to Hannah Thomas 3-6, 1-6. Sama Malik played a good match against Zulaikha Van Den Bos and narrowly lost 3-6, 4-6. Ellie Coleman lost against Lucy Edwards 2-6, 2-6 but Aisha Brown played a very good match at number one and beat Connie Simpson 6-3, 6-2 to leave Avon leading 3-1 after the singles.

The girls played very well in the doubles but could not quite get the wins. Sama and Natasha lost to Lucy and Hannah 3-6, 3-6 and then Aisha and Ellie lost to Zulaikha and Emily 6-7, 1-6.

So despite some great performances over the weekend the girls finished second overall.

Great team effort and well done to them all.
