Tuesday, September 09, 2014

Aisha Brown finished as a triple singles winner at the 3E Security County Closed tennis tournament held at the Cambridge Club from 25th to 29th August. Aisha won the 14, 16 and 18 and under singles with some exciting tennis.

In the girls 14 and under she beat Megan Carmichael who had a great tournament to get to the final. Aisha, three years older, however was too powerful for her young opponent in the final and won quite easily.

In the 16 and under final Aisha played top seed Lauren Watson-Steele and won this 6/4, 6/3 in a high quality baseline match.

In the 18 and under event she played Natalie Bacon, who had caused an upset to get to the final. This was a hard hitting baseline match with Aisha coming out as a 6/3, 6/4 winner.

In the boys 18 and under final top seed Tom Hands followed up his excellent week at the Aegon 18 and under Nationals where he was runner up, by beating Chad Richard 6/2, 6/3 in the final. Tom is the most improved male player in the County and made his senior debut this summer.

In the boys 16 and under Dominic Lea had a good match with Josh Wilson who is getting back into competition after a long lay - off with a shoulder injury and Dominic eventually won 7/5, 6/4. Both these boys will feature strongly in the County 18 and under team next year.

The boys 14 and under event was won by 12 year old Harry Wendelken who has had such a good year Nationally in the 12 age group. Harry went through the whole tournament dropping only one game and that was in the final to the vastly improved Nick Ghaznavi.

The 12 and under event was won by top seed James Murphy over Ethan Lee 6/3, 6/4.

The girls 12 and under final was an all Malik family final with the left handed Sama out lasting sister Chaaya 6/4, 6/2.

The 10 and under was a mixed event where Cambridge LTC’s rising star Yujiro Onuma played fellow club colleague Alexander Boyd-Bench

Winning 4/1, 4/2. They were seeded one and two respectively.

The 9 and under mixed event was won by Seth Newman who had a great tournament beating top seed Felix Dean 7/3. 5/7. 7/1 in the final.

The 8 and under mixed event was won by Ryan Parkins who beat Cassius Jessop 10/4 in the final.

In total there were 117 players competing a figure we hope to add to in the coming year!

Well done to all those children who competed – a great week.

Sue Rich, referee was very pleased with the atmosphere and nature of the competitors and hopes many will aspire to represent their County in all the age groups in the future.
