14U Aegon County Cup 2013-Boys Qualifying Report

Saturday 4th May - Kent v Berkshire

  1. James Davis                                        1. Davis and Goodwin
  2. Nick Brookes                                      2. Smith and O’Reilly
  3. Matthew Summers
  4. Jonah Smith

Once again on paper we looked very strong as a team, but ever since the first training session there had been a real buzz about this group of boys. Jonah and Matt got the team off to the best start for the loss of only 4 games between them. 2-0 KENT

Nick and James quickly followed suit and dispatched of their opponents in slightly more competitive matches winning 6-3 6-4 and 6-2 6-3 respectively. 4-0 KENT

Dan came in for the rested Nick, and Ethan had his first county cup match as the boys won both doubles in quick time. 6-0 KENT

Sunday 5th May - Kent v Hampshire and IOW

  1. James Davis                                        1. Davis and Summers
  2. Nick Brookes                                      2. Smith and Goodwin
  3. Matt Summers
  4. Ethan O’Reilly

Due to the format of being in a group with 6 teams split into two boxes of three, meant that the doubles against Hants was scheduled for the Saturday afternoon. James and matt were awesome and won 6-1 6-1. Jonah and Dan played a very spirited Hants pair who took them all the way and even had a set point in the 2nd set. Dan came alive and almost single handed saved the set point himself, whilst the boys then went onto wrap up a 6-4 7-5 win. 2-0 KENT

Hampshire were certainly going to put up a stiffer challenge than Berkshire and came right at us in each match giving their best shot. Ethan despite a slight wobble in the 2nd set won 6-1 6-4, whilst Matt won 6-1 6-1. 4-0 KENT

Nick and James were up next and found themselves in tricky matches. Nick won the first comfortably 6-2 but found himself 1-4 down in the 2nd, but then showed how far he has come in his game and maturity by reeling off the next 5 games to take the match 2and4. James found himself down the whole of the first set only to see his class come through at 3-4 down winning 3 games in a row. The 2nd set was still a challenge, but James broke his opponent’s resilience eventually winning 4and3! 6-0 KENT

Monday 6th - Kent v Buckinghamshire

  1. James Davis                                        1. Davis and Brookes
  2. Nick Brookes                                      2. Smith and Summers
  3. Matt Summers
  4. Jonah Smith

In a repeat of last year Buckinghamshire like us had comprehensively beaten their opponents on the two previous days, which set up a play-off match to qualify for the National Finals. Again we thought we would be stronger than our opponents, but knew that if we underperformed they were capable of making our task more difficult. Jonah was as expected too consistent for his opponent winning in straight sets, but Matt found himself in a battle with his tricky opponent and faced a couple of set points in the first set, a rarity for the weekend. He battled his way through with a 7-6 6-3 win. 2-0 KENT

Nick and James were potentially facing tougher matches, but knew that if they both performed as they could the victory would ours. The boys put in two of the most resounding county cup performances I have seen in my 15 years in the role, with Nick destroying his higher rated opponent 6-1 6-2 and James winning 6-2 6-0!! 4-0 KENT

With the match already wrapped up the boys went on to play the 2nd doubles anyway winning in straight sets, but the 1st doubles was not played. 5-0 KENT

The boys showed a lot of maturity and a real team spirit this weekend whilst competing hard. It was probably the most comprehensive beating that any Kent team has handed out to their opponents with stats of...matches 17-0, sets 34-0 and only faced 3 set points in total all weekend!! They have certainly shown that they are hot contenders for the National title.
