Match report - Aegon Team Tennis 9&U Canterbury LTC 'A' v Wye LTC - 12/05/13

The Canterbury LTC 9&U ‘A’ team travelled to a village outside Ashford in Kent for a Division 1 clash against East Kent rivals Wye LTC.  A close relationship between the two clubs, with six of the players training together on different days of the week, meant it was always likely to be a friendly fixture. First round wins for Toby, Alexis and Ewan saw Canterbury LTC off to a good start but they were pegged back by a 7-5 7-5 defeat of Louis by his school classmate Lucas (Wye LTC). The second round again offered straightforward wins to Alexis and Ewan (Canterbury LTC) who finished in time to support their teammates in the final sets of both their singles. Canterbury LTC’s Louis came from a set behind to beat Daniel 4-7 7-4 7-3 while Toby and Lucas demonstrated some powerful serving and ferocious hitting before Lucas secured a hard fought win for Wye LTC 8-6 4-7 9-7.

Wye continued battling hard into the doubles. Bronwyn and Edward conceded the first set 7-2 and fought hard in the second before losing it 8-6.  In the other doubles match, the 1 and 2 pairs enjoyed a nail-bitingly close match! At 6-6 in the first set no one would have imagined there would be yet another 24 points to play but so it proved with Canterbury winning by a phenomenal score of 19-17. The second set promised similar drama at 6-6 but Canterbury edged themselves to an 8-6 win.

Overall Canterbury LTC beat Wye LTC 8-2, although the matches were far closer than the overall score suggests!

Canterbury would like to thank the Wye players and parents for their hospitality. The match was played in great spirit and a very enjoyable day was rounded off with an impromptu game of football.

Report by Canterbury captain – Sharon Chastang.
