14&U Boys Aegon County Cup: Roehampton

Monday, May 13, 2013

Team; Aydin Caglayan,  Declan Moran, James McCall, Tom Batchelor, Ed Gardner & Henry Lidington.

Captains; Tom Spinks & Paul Maggs

Day 1; v Surrey
Ed and James stepped in first for 4 and 3 singles both being defeated by very professional performances fromSurrey, then the rain came and Declan playing at 2 on the indoor courts came up against Ben Draper (older son of Roger - Chief Exec of LTA), the match had a slow start with Surrey taking first set, then Decs hit back strongly in 2nd, meanwhile Aydin at no.1 was a set up and looking good, Captains were thinking 2 all after singles against a strong team but it was not to be as Decs lost out to a more consistent player in 3rd and Aydin lost in 3 sets having had 6 Match points! Unfortunately Avon couldn't get any consolation points from the doubles as James and Tom lost in straight sets and Aydin and Decs lost in 3rd set match tie break. Avon lost 6-0 but could of been closer.

Day 2; v Cornwall
Tom started at no.4 singles and made a winning debut having taken a nasty slip in first set and hurting his knee, as Captain Maggs would say 'he man'd up!' And won. James played a great match at 3 and won, Decs lost another 3 set match and Aydin won very comfortably. 3-1 Avon. Henry came in for doubles with Ed and had a stunning performance and won 2/3 whilst also winning the tie, Aydin and Decs won the final rubber in 3. 5-1 Avon.

Day 3; v Gloustershire(3rd/4th play off)
Ed got off to a flying start taking the first set but ended up losing in 3, James played his best tennis of the event as he won 6-0 in 3rd (his first ever full 3 set match!). With the match score tied at 1 all Decs starts great but loses the momentum and goes down in 2 sets, Aydin puts in another very solid performance and wins easy. At 2 all Tom and Henry lose at no. 2 doubles, so down to Decs and Aydin who destroy their opponents and level match at 3 all. So tie is settled by a match tie break, both teams put forward their top 2 players so game on - great start for Avon going 9-5 up only to be pegged back to 9 all and then saving a match point and going on to win a tense end 12-10, great effort boys and great to watch - Avon win the match and finish 3rd.

Captains comments; Great team to take away all very well behaved, effort levels were good, we spoke to the players about having more confidence and belief in their own a game/abilities  and not to focus on other players ratings or reputation.  Thanks to all the team for making it an enjoyable weekend.
