The West of England Community Games Fund Re-Opens!

Thursday, May 02, 2013

The West of England Sport Trust (Wesport), in partnership with Quartet Community Foundation, has today re-launched it’s fund to support communities to come together to take part in sports and cultural activities.

Inspired by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Community Games is creating a legacy from this great event in the heart of the communities up and down the country. In 2012 the Community Gamessaw over 1,600 events takes place nationally with over 1 million people getting involved. In the West of England, Community Games such as the Portbury Community Games (organised by Sharon Worthy, a London 2012 Torch Bearer) and South Gloucestershire’s Community Games (organised by Brian Gardner, from South Gloucestershire Council) received national exposure.

The West of England Community Games Fund aims to provide a small financial contribution to help support those who want to create an event that brings their community together to celebrate sport and culture. The fund brings together individuals, companies, charitable trusts and statutory agencies through the Quartet Community Foundation, who wants to support groups that have been inspired by the London 2012 Games. The fund will help successful applicants to make their event a reality and can be used for anything that will make their event a success.

The fund is open to small, local, voluntary and community organisations where a small amount of funding can make a big difference. Applicants must be based and working in the West of England area (Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset or South Gloucestershire).

Steve Nelson, Wesport Chief Executive said:
“The Community Games is one of my favourite initiatives due to its ability to bring communities together to enjoy sporting and cultural activities. We understand that sometimes these events need a small financial boost to bring them to life. That’s why with Quartet Community Foundation we set up the West of England Community Games Fund. In 2012, we funded 17 Games with a total of £8,500. I would urge any community thinking about running a community event to get in touch with us and take advantage of this fantastic opportunity. “
