Local Village Club awarded Cambridgeshire LTA Club of the year

Thursday, April 23, 2015

Halsingfield Tennis Club, a small village club with just two courts and no floodlights, has been voted Club of the Year 2015 by Cambridgeshire LTA.

Presenting the award Richard Barnes, LTA Councillor and Chair of Cambs LTA said, ‘We are delighted to make this award to Haslingfield. They are a shining example to small Tennis clubs of what can be achieved with an enthusiastic Committee and coach’.

The club has over 160 members and this is twice the national average for a two court club. It has one of the largest memberships for a two court club in the County and has a record of encouraging juniors to take Tennis Leader and other courses. This year two of its junior members obtained the Duke of Edinburgh bronze award resulting from their volunteering at the club.

Haslingfield has a small population of just 1,500 people and around 75% of club members are village residents.

The club and its coach work closely with the village primary School – nearly half of its pupils have attended coaching sessions in the last two years.

The club has the full support of the Parish Council and has recently obtained Planning consent for a third court and to provide floodlights to its two existing courts.  It is now making applications to help with funding these vital improvements.

The Chair of the club, Robert Judge, said

‘We are thrilled to have been given this award and look forward to continuing to provide Tennis to the community and to encourage Haslingfield juniors and adults to play Tennis’.
