Wednesday, July 17, 2013

Competition was of the highest standard at the Sainsbury’s School Games Summer Festival for Cambridgeshire & Peterborough, which took place at One Leisure St Ives Outdoor and across three other venues, on Friday 28th June 2013.

The Summer Festival, in its second year and funded by the Sainsbury’s School Games programme, saw over 800 young people competing in county finals across nine sports and 11 competitions, from school year 3 – 11. All competing teams had qualified to represent their School Sport Partnership with 2 teams from each of the 5 Partnerships coming together to battle it out for county honours.

The day of competition kicked off with an opening ceremony featuring performances from Netherhall School’s Samba Kings and Street Dancers of Winhills Primary Academy from St Neots - before England International Netballer Lindsay Keable, officially opened the Games.

In the four primary age competitions, there were four different winning schools. In the Year 3/4 Cricket, both schools representing Witchford took the top places – Kingsfield Primary were crowned champions ahead of Ely St Mary Primary in 2nd and St John C of E Primary from Peterborough finishing 3rd. In the Year 3/4 Mini Red Tennis at Huntingdon Tennis Centre, Harston and Newton Primary representing South Cambridgeshire were victorious with Sancton Wood (Cambridge) taking silver and St Annes C of E from Godmanchester taking the bronze.

In the two Year 5/ 6 competitions, South Cambridgeshire were again victorious taking gold and silver in the Quicksticks Hockey through Histon and Impington Primary and Steeple Morden respectively, with Abbey Meadows from Cambridge picking up 3rd place.

Results from across all Level 3 Festivals over the last academic year have been collated to give a Sainsbury’s School Games School Sports Partnership Champion in Cambridgeshire & Peterborough for 2012/13. Peterborough won the prestigious award with 7 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals, to a total of 13, holding off South Cambridgeshire who finished on a higher haul of 20 medals, but were piped by one gold; finishing on 6 gold, 8 silver and 7 bronze medals. Cambridge secured 3rd place, with Huntingdonshire in a close 4th and Witchford in 5th.

Medals were presented by Lindsay Keable and other VIPs including Sir Graham Bright, Police and Crime Commissioner for Cambridgeshire and Councillor Martin Curtis Leader of the County Council.
