Girls U12 County Cup 2016 Report

The Cambridgeshire Team of Lydia Sivirentsava, Weiqi Ye, Sarah Thomas and Tiffany Qin were up agains Suffolk, Bedfordshire, Norfolk and Channel Islands in the U12 Girls County Cup 2016 Group D at the Eastgate club in Lincoln.

 

Saturday 25th June 2016

vs Suffolk: L 0-8

First up for the girls was potentially the toughest match in the group against Suffolk. Tiffany at number 3 and Weiqi at number 2 played some great tennis, but fell short to superior opposition in Justice Hall (1-4 0-4) and Isabelle Eaton (0-4 1-4) respectively. Lydia at number 1 put in a fighting display to come back from a set down to fall only just short against Maddie McLoughlin 0-4 4-2 7-10. So the girls were 6-0 down (2 points per rubber) going into the doubles, where Lydia and Weiqi, although playing some exciting doubles, lost out to Isabelle and Maddie 1-4 3-5. So the final score was 8-0 to Suffolk.

vs Channel Islands: W 8-0

The second match of the day was against Channel Islands. The same singles line up of Lydia at number 1, Weigi at number 2 and Tiffany at number 3, were all too strong for their opponents, winning fairly comfortably. Lydia beat Jessica Tostevin 4-2 4-1, Weiqi got the better of Nina Grossi 4-0 4-0 and Tiffany came through against Ingrid Marsh 4-0 4-1. This meant the girls took a 6-0 lead into the doubles, where Tiffany teamed up with Sarah Thomas. After losing a difficult set 1-4, the girls played more aggressively in their shot making to come back with a fine 4-1 set themselves, and then taking out the championship tie-break 10-6, sealing a well deserved 8-0 win for Cambs.

Sunday 26th June 2016

vs Bedfordshire: W 6-2

First up on day two saw the Cambs Girls take on Bedfordshire. The same singles line up of Lydia, Weiqi and Tiffany were up against Jessica Matthews, Elizaveta Verzhbitskaya and Megan Brook. Both Lydia and Weiqi came through, Weiqi winning comfortably 4-1 4-1 whilst Lydia battled in a 4-1 4-5 (3) 10-7 win. Tiffany, up against a strong Megan fell short 1-4 1-4 although a lot closer than the score showed. So the girls were 4-2 up going into the all-important doubles, where Lydia and Weiqi secured a 4-1- 4-1 win against Jessica and Elizaveta and winning the tie for Cambridgeshire 6-2.

vs Norfolk: W 6-2

The final match of the weekend was against Norfolk, where victory would mean an excellent 2nd place finish for the girls, behind a highly impressive Suffolk team. With true Cambridge determination, the girls took a 3-0 lead and therefore won the tie in the singles. Lydia and Tiffany battled through tight three setters, beating Mia Bartram and Hannah Mann respectively. Lydia winning 4-1 4-5 (6) 10-4 and Tiffany 5-3 4-5 (2) 10-4. Weiqi won her singles in a far more comfortable fashion 4-2 4-1 against Hannah Wilson Kemsley. The final match of the weekend saw Tiffany and Sarah take on Mia and Elissa Wood in the doubles, losing out 2-4 2-4.

The girls represented their county fantastically over the weekend, showing great respect for their opposition with courage and determination throughout their matches. This resulted in a fantastic 2nd place and a result they can be proud of.
