Cambridgeshire’s girls’ team of Alice McGee, Vicky Nicholas, Sophia Rolt and Stella Gordon won their age group in the 12 Counties Event at Corby. In the first match Cambs beat Northants by 3 matches to one. Alice McGee had a tough match at number one losing to the higher rated Cassie Dix, while Vicky, Sophia and Stella all won. Sophia did well to win the match tie break 10 -6. In the second match against Staffordshire all the team won although Alice was pushed to a third set. In the final match against Norfolk – Cambs won again by 3 matches to one. Norfolk’s number one player was too strong for Alice but the rest of the team won in straight sets for Cambs to top the group. Stella playing at number four only lost 3 games in her three matches. Cambs finished first, Northants second, Noroflk third and Staffordshire fourth.
The Boys team of Sam Fleck, Will Huyton, Jack Thorndike and Josh Lightowler had to work hard to win their group. They drew 2 matches each against Northamptonshire with wins from Sam Fleck and Will Huyton 10 – 7 in the third! In the second match they drew 2 matches all against Staffordshire, again with wins for Sam and Will and a narrow lose in the third for Jack. At this stage all the matches in the boys group had been drawn 2 all so going into the third round any County could win the group and finish in any position! Sam again got the team off to a flying start beating Harry Weeds of Norfolk 4/0, 4/1 and this inspired the rest of the team who all recorded wins so Cambs won 4 matches to 0. Cambs finished first, Staffordshire and Northants tied second and Norfolk fourth. Sam Fleck won all his matches with the loss of only three games.
These results leave Cambs heading the Group with only the 16 and under teams to play in April.
