So close but yet so far for the U9 Orange team

Wednesday, March 09, 2011

Harry Wendelken was the star winning all of his four matches and Cambs got of to a good start beating Shropshire 2-1 with wins for Charlie Taylor and Harry Wendelken and they followed that up with a 2-1 win over Norfolk A. Taylor and Wendelken again were the ones with victory.

Going in to the last group match against Notts, knowing a win would mean Cambs top the group, Wendelken won 7-4, 7-4 against Nathan West before Charlie Taylor going down 7-3, 1-7, 5-7 to Harry Harold-Vaux which meant it was one match apiece with Kamie Lowe to play. In the end Helena Constantinou was too strong for Lowe with a 7-2, 7-5 win which meant that Notts, Norfolk A and Cambs were all tied on two wins apiece in the group. Due to the number of sets won, Cambs finished 3rd in the group and meant we were playing off for 5th place.

It was very hard to take to finish 3rd in the group, especially as it was all so close and we looked like were going to win the group when Charlie Taylor had won the 1st set of his match but it wasn’t to be.

Playing Northants next, Taylor, Wendelken and Kamie Lowe won all their matches which meant  a 3-0 win and we were playing Leicestershire next for 5th place.

Again, the work was done with a win by Wendelken who ended up winning all four of his matches and was backed up by a win by Charlie Taylor before Kamie Lowe lost in 3 tight sets 7-2, 4-7, 5-7.

Overall it could have been so different after losing out in a very tight group but it was a great response to win the next two matches and finish 5th.
