The Cambridgeshire over 40s Ladies Tennis Team triumphed over Leicestershire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire and Lincolnshire to win the coveted Winter Midland Counties Ladies 40s league trophy. The team, captained by Caroline Thornton, benefited from strong performances from Fleur Clegg, Rachel Hill, Christine Sprowell as well as from Di Cobb, Lesley Birch, Alice Thomson and Jenny Chin.
The Matches were played at the Corby Indoor Tennis Centre throughout the winter, with Cambridgeshire winning four matches and drawing one. It is the first time the Cambridgeshire over 40s Ladies have won the league, Caroline Thornton, the captain is delighted with Cambridgeshires victory and said “it is great to get this win, particularly as Cambridgeshire have not won this event before. We have a very strong squad of over 40 players in Cambridgeshire now and there is a great team spirit which helps us get the results”.
The Cambridgeshire team (photo attached) beat second place rivals Lincolnshire 6-2 on Sunday 1st April 2012 to secure overall victory. The players are from left to right - Di Cobb, Fleur Clegg, Caroline Thornton (captain) and Alice Thomson. Fleur and Di won all 4 rubbers impressively (7-5, 6-3 vs the first pair and 6-1, 6-2 vs the second pair). Caroline and Alice won a set from both the first and second pair.
Further success was achieved by the Cambridgeshire over 40s Mens team who won the prestigious Winter Midlands Counties Mens 40s League trophy for a second year running. The team captained by David Mills, included Pieter van Houten, Alan Jordan, Marcie Winlock, Scott Martin, Alan Leeder, Hugh Tomlinson and Gary Keens.
