Friday, October 31, 2014

Cambridgeshire got of to a flying start in the 12 Counties event that is being played in Corby over the winter.

The girls and boys 12 and under team finished top in the opening fixtures of the event, played at the weekend.

With other age groups to be played in the coming months when all the finishing positions are then added together to create a final standing, Cambs will be looking to get promotion back to the 1st division.

The boys team, consisting of GB U12 ranked number 6 Derrick Chen as their number one, with James Murphy, Vicente Castillo and Zach Cox making a strong lineup. They beat Northants, Oxford and Norfolk and only dropping two rubbers in the process.

Castillo was the only player to not have a 100% record and lost his opening match V Northants while Chen, Murphy and Cox all won in straight sets.

Against Oxford it was a whitewash with a 4-0 score line before playing Norfolk. Being 2-1 up with wins from Chen and Murphy and a loss from Castillo, it came down to a nail biting match from Cox who eventually came through 5-4 5-3 to guarantee top spot.

The girls was much closer and with a team consisting of Sama Malik, Natasha Scott, Chaaya Malik and Charlotte Laing , they were looking to repeat the boys performance.

Although hey finished top, they drew against Oxford and Norfolk but by beating Northants 3-1 it meant they won in a very closely contested group. Sama, Chaaya and Charlotte all won two of their three matches to clinch top spot.

Captain Chris Johnson said "It was a great start to the 12 counties event and after a very close relegation last year, Cambs are determined to get back to division 1. We had a strong team for the U12s and it showed in the final result."
