It was a case of contrasting fortunes for our Senior County Teams in the Aegon nationwide Cup Competition last week. Our Men, based at Cromer in the lofty heights of Group 2, really rose to the challenge with victories over Warwickshire (7-2), the North of Scotland (8-1) and Hampshire and the Isle of Wight (5-4), losing only to the two promoted sides South Wales (2-7) and Yorkshire (3-6). To retain their status at this level, amongst the elite counties in this historic competition, is an outstanding achievement indeed. By contrast, an understrength Suffolk Ladies’ side were unable to resist relegation in Group 6A at Tonbridge Wells, going down to Wiltshire (3-6), Shropshire (2-7) and Hereford and Worcestershire (3-6).
Many of these team members will be competing in the annual Framlingham Tournament next week, with Suffolk Men’s Captain Jeremy Cowley unable to defend his Suffolk Closed and Open Singles titles. Another sizeable entry of seniors, juniors and veterans will be enjoying the usual festival of tennis throughout the week.
