Olympic fever takes Wortham Tennis Club by storm

Monday, August 13, 2012

To celebrate the start of the Olympics, teams representing 12 countries took part in an Olympic themed charity tennis tournament on Saturday 28 July. Each team, 2 adults and 2 juniors, created a colourful spectacle as they paraded onto the Wortham tennis courts wearing country colours, waving their national flags and cheered on by supporters. After a lively ‘round robin’ group competition in the morning where adults played adults, juniors played juniors and adult/junior pairs played each other, the afternoon session saw two highly competitive semi finals -  Jamaica v Russia and Italy v Spain. The final between Italy and Russia resulted in Italy, represented by Mallen Baker, Steph Smith, Chris Smith and John Hughes, taking the gold medal and Russia the silver. The play off for the bronze medal was won by Jamaica. The whole event was characterised by a great standard of play, fantastic team spirit and a general sense of fun and enjoyment. It also gave the club a new opportunity to promote junior play and to allow adults and juniors to compete together. The tournament was sponsored by Wortham club members Netty and Hans Verkroost and the event raised £480 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance Service.
