Top Juniors flock to Felixstowe

Friday, August 17, 2012

A record entry of 314 talented youngsters has been received for the 83rd Grade 3 Felixstowe Junior Tournament, when Suffolk’s players will need to be at their best against any number of highly-ranked players from the East Region and counties far and wide, including Durham, Berkshire, Kent, Surrey, Avon, Yorkshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire,Hampshire, Somerset, Oxfordshire, East of Scotland, and even the Isle of Man !

In the now established Open Singles that many tournaments now have, Paul Midgley and Framlingham 18U champion Kitty McWhirter carry the home flag against the likes of Essex county player Matthew Pearce and Norfolk’s Emma Layton. Miss McWhirter is expected to go well in the 18 Unders, together with Framlingham champion and 2011 runner-up Ryan Lambert. Suffolk look to have a strong hand in the Boys’ 16Under event, Framlingham winner James Ling hoping to keep up his fine form together with Toby Cutting and Max Darrington, winner of the Felixstowe 14Under title last August.

Fresh from his Framlingham triumph over brother Noah, Oscar Cutting heads the 12Under list, though he is likely to be pushed all the way by the likes of Hertfordshire’s Tom Watts and Cambridgeshire’s Alex Wardley. Framlingham 14Under champion Nia Braidford, who captured the 12U Felixstowe last year, will be out to maintain her fine record of this Summer.

It’s likely a few youngsters from Stowmarket Tennis Club will be participating, and coach Chris Cunningham has sent this update:

Two weeks of junior camps completed without a single drop of rain !

Courts available for Box League and Club Tournament matches

Club mornings as popular as ever, with 4 courts full of players regularly attending on Monday and Thursday mornings.

Summer team matches now over, with Club Evenings attracting players looking for a little extra practice for their Club Tournament matches.

Following a recent gardening morning, Chris puts in a timely reminder for ALL clubs that their regular management and progress very much relies on the help and support of volunteers. Stowmarket is a club known for quality tennis, commitment of the committee and overall friendliness and atmosphere, but activities don’t just happen by accident, so club members do need to make a contribution to ensure development continues. The Club belongs to all members.
