Bingham's David Phillipson takes on Dutch world No 4 Robin Ammerlaan at the Florida Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships in Boca Raton on Friday after the Bingham 21-year-old crowned a landmark week in his career by beating his first world top 10 player and subsequently reaching his first quarter-final at Super Series level, the most important tier of wheelchair tennis tournament outside of those integrated in to the Grand Slams.

Phillipson, who trains at Loughborough Tennis Club under coach Martyn Whait, gained the biggest single success of his career on Wednesday when he fought back from a set down to beat Austrian world No 6 and fifth seed Martin Legner 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 in his opening match.  He followed that up with a 6-3 6-1 win over Canada's Yann Mathieu on Thursday and will now take on 2004 Paralympic champion and 2008 Beijing silver medallist Ammerlaan in his latest challenge.

Regardless of Friday's result, current world No 20 Phillipson, who has occupied the British No 2 ranking in recent months, looks set to become Britain's No 1 ranked player for the second time in his career next week and could yet attain a career best world ranking.

After making his Paralympic Games debut in Beijing, where he was the only Briton to reach the second round of the men's singles before losing out to Legner, Phillipson is now focused on the London 2012 Paralympics.
