The LTA Grade 4 West Bridgford Indoor Veterans Tournament was held from 5th to 8th January 2012, and attracted a very good entry from across the UK. The standard was excellent with most 1st round matches being equally matched, providing a great warm up for the National Championships.
In the men’s over 50’s age group, Tony Alexander [Notts], battled through some tough early matches against players with a better rating, to eventually beat the holder and number 1 seed, Clive Johnson [Lancs.], 6-2, 6-1, in the final. Tony then partnered Peter Whitehead [Notts] to beat Dave Brown and Mike Breslin [Yorks], 6-4, 7-6, in the doubles final.
David Whitelaw [Yorks] was the surprise package in the men’s over 60’s event, beating the number 1 and 3 seeds to reach the final, where he won a nail biting contest against the number 2 seed John Taylor [Notts], 6-4, 1-6, 10-7. David then teamed up with his Yorkshire team mate Wilf Jessop to win the over 60’s doubles, beating Eddie Fox [Notts] and Paul Denyer [Wilts] 6-4, 6-2, in the final.
In the women’s over 50’s singles, Ann Brown [Notts] and Shirley Fox [Leics] came through their round robin groups, to contest a very competitive final, which was won by Shirley Fox 4-6, 6-0, 10-1.
