We had a wonderful day on the first Tuesday of the Championships. The weather was beautiful - almost too hot - hard to believe for the UK. The day started early with a 5.30am train to get us into London before our Centre Court tour. The time at the Championships was educational for players to see how athletic the players are at the highest levels of the game. The highlight of the day was during our tour of the players practice area Rafa Nadal happened to walk past us and start is practice on the court directly ahead of us.

Seven of the world’s top 10 men, six of the world’s top 10 women and seven of the world’s top 10 quad division players head a field of 100 entrants for the 21st British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships, which takes place at the City of Nottingham Tennis Centre from Tuesday, 20th – Sunday 25th July 2010.

Britain’s top three ranked men’s players, David Phillipson (from Bingham), Gordon Reid and Marc McCarroll head the home entry, with all three currently ranked inside the world’s top 25.  The British Open remains an extra special tournament for 21-year-old world No. 13 Phillipson, who hails from Bingham, Nottinghamshire, and this year the local favourite will bid to reach his third Super Series quarter-final of the season after reaching the last eight at both the Florida Open and the Japan Open.

Farnsfield event

In June we held a bbq and presentation afternoon and fun session for all our mini tennis players. Certificates and medals were presented to the boys and girls who won the North Notts League. In addition certificates were given to the players who were succesful in the recent mini tennis orange tournament at the club. Parents and friends also attended the event

A mini Wimbledon took place at the Club in early July. A series of competitive tasks were set up throughou the morning but the emphasis was definitely on having fun. Coaching was free  and the club's aim was  to show case what is on offer at the club. More than 60  adults and children took advantage of the tennis sessions and many people from the village popped in for tea coffee and cakes and to have a go on the tombola. It was a beautiful day and the club was able to raise £340 which will be used to improve club facilities

BBC interview

Following the Wimbledon fortnight, with Andy Murray’s success in reaching the semi finals contrasting with publicity surrounding the performances of other British players, BBC East Midlands met up with Dominic and Nathan West at Farnsfield Tennis Club in their home village.

The news item was concerning where the next crop of British players were going to come from and targeted the West brothers as Dominic is supported through the AEGON Future Stars programme and Nathan has recently been selected for National Talent ID training in Bolton.

The boys took it all in their stride playing in front of the TV camera and then performing equally well in front of the microphone.  Interviews were also held with mum, Marion, and Andy McFeeters, Tennis Development Manager for Notts and Lincs.

ben and donovan

After winning the Nottinghamshire Road to Wimbledon County Finals, it will be Donovan Cellupica-Towers and Freya Christie who will both represent Nottinghamshire at the All England Club National Finals.

Pictured here are the boys singles winner, Donovan, on the right, with the runner-up, Ben King.

The Park Team - winners

Eastwood were the pre-tournament favourites for this year’s Short Format League Cup tournament. Defending champions, they had also made a good start to their league campaign. However, just three days previously, they had played The Park in a division one league game and been held to a 6 – 6 draw. Was it an ominous sign?
