Attenborough Tennis Club’s Championships

2010 saw a new name on the honours board for the men’s singles trophy. Two juniors battled it out for the trophy, both having beaten more experienced club players in earlier rounds. John Eagles, the reigning champion, had cruised through to the semi-final, but was surprised by the sheer tenacity of young Robert Schofield, and went down 4–6, 5–7. In the other half of the draw, junior, Saul Abbiss, played some blistering tennis to defeat club captain Chris Lacey by 6–1, 6–2. Despite a bright start by Robert in the final, Saul proved too strong and took the title for the first time 6–3, 6–1.
Saul Abbis then teamed up with Chris Lacey to win the Men’s doubles final. Both Saul and Chris put away the volleys to claim a 6–4, 6–0 win over John Eagles and Bob Bridges.

It was a similar story in the ladies section as Dawn Mumby, playing her usual cavalier, hard hitting game, defeated Charlotte Britton 6–2, 6–0 to claim her 13th singles title. Dawn then partnered Lorraine Hart to take the ladies doubles title with a powerful 6 –3, 6–0 win over Angela Johnson and Jane Bowden.

John Eagles and Charlotte Britton, both losing finalists, were also to contest another final – the mixed doubles. They had made it to the final after a very good, 7-6, 6-4, win over previous winners, Dawn Mumby and Richard Korzeniewski, in the semi-finals. In the final they finally came good on the day. Playing against last year’s champions, Lorraine Hart and Bob Bridges, they cranked up the power to overwhelm their opponents 6–2, 6–2.

In the division one finals David Yorke and Richard Korzeniewski took the men’s doubles with a 4-0,4-2 win over Jacob Ireson and Patrick Kumah. Patrick Kumah then battled with Nathan Pentelow and eventually prevailed 5-7, 7-5, 7-1. Rhiannon Lee reclaimed her junior girls title with a 4-0, 4-1 victory over Kate Rosser.
