Girls 10U County Cup Report 2018
Team: Sophie Lager, Polly Ofield, Henna Quraishi, Emma Beale
The County Cup was held at Eastgate Tennis Club, Lincoln, over two days.
The first round was against Lincolnshire, playing short sets, a match tie break, and sudden death deuce in all matches, in the event of matches drawn a shoot out was played to 10 points.
Henna played first against Poppy Gibbons, with most games going to deuce, Poppy won having just that more experience, Henna will still be eligible for this event next year. Polly had a close match, going to set all, she lost the match tie break 7-10. Sophie played a very solid match against Ruby Cooling, to win 4-2, 4-2. Sophie and Polly played the doubles, but sadly went down in straight sets.

The second round was against Derbyshire. Henna had another good match, playing more confidently, loosing the second set in a tiebreak. Polly also played well, with long rallies in most points, but her opponent was able to finish the points, she lost in two sets. Sophie had an easy match winning in straight sets. Again, we were needing to win the doubles to go to a match shoot out. Sophie played with Emma, they won the first set 3-5 playing very well, lost the second 4-2, and in a close match tie break lost 7-10.

Sunday was a hot sunny day with the wind playing a large part in the tennis played. Notts first match was against Northamptonshire. Henna played a solid match, staying in the rallies, allow the errors to come from her opponent, she won in straight sets, a great start to the day. Polly had a tough match against Tegan Bush, who played amazing tennis for her size, Polly lost in straight sets. Sophie played another solid match to win in straight sets. Sophie and Polly played the doubles, but were outplayed particularly at the net. This result put the match at 2-2, so a shootout match tie break was played. It was very close, with each team going 2 points up/ then down,the final result was 12 – 10 to Northamptonshire.

Northamptonshire won 3-2
The final round was against Leicestershire. Emma played at number 3 in this round. She won the first set 5-3, lost the second in a tight set tie break 4-5, and in a long match tie break went down 9-11. Emma played very well with her tennis improving throughout the match. Henna had a tough match against Flora Davies, a year older, she lost in straight sets. Sophie’s singles I felt was the match of the day, with the wind playing a huge part against Sophie Ashford, a player who she has lost to in the past. She lost the first set 2-4, 2-1 down really learnt how to use the wind, and play against it, she won the second set 5-4. The tennis in the match tie break was of a very high standard for their age, our Sophie won 11-9. Sophie and Emma played the doubles, sadly going down 3-5, 2-4.

I would like to commend Sophie on her play this weekend as she did win all her singles. We had some very close matches, with five matches lost by 2 points. The girls played so well, supporting each other as a team, I hope the enjoyed their first County Cup.
