20 July v Warwickshire
Team: Bill Sissons (capt); Nick Shelvey Les Hurst Neil Lucas John Ellis
Venue: West Bridgford Tennis Club
Result: Warwickshire won 5-0
Captain’s Report:
Nick was up against a very classy guy called Derek Bradshaw and although Nick kept him on court for a fair amount of time [I am not sure how long the knock went on for] but lost in straight sets.
Les was also up against a very good player but showed his fighting spirit before losing 6-3 6-2.
Neil and I were more fortunate in that their Doubles Pair were not of quite the same quality and we won set 1 but then faded and lost in yet another tie break.
John kindly stepped in for me to partner Neil in the reverse doubles and put up a very spirited effort against their superstars before losing 6-1 6-3.
Nick and Les played well but lost in a Championship tie break.
Warks are a very strong side and are destined to get into Division 1 in 2 years time.
26 July v Cumbria
Team: Bill Sissons (capt); Nick Shelvey Stuart Williams Les Hurst
Venue: Maryport Cumbria
Result: Cumbria won 3-2
Captain’s Report:
Nick was feeling under the weather in humid conditions and was up against an opponent who seemed happy to stay on a very slow court all day to get a win under his belt. Nick was unable to stay consistent and lost in straight sets.
Stuart took a little time to get into his stride but came back to win the second set. Unfortunately he made too many mistakes in the deciding Tie Break and lost by 10pts to 4.
Les and I had a nervy start but got our act together and won in straight sets.
Nick who was now feeling a little better teamed up with Stuart and won their Doubles comfortably in 2 straight sets.
Les and I were a set and 5 games to 3 down but managed to win the second set 7-5. The tie break went right down to the wire but we lost by 10 pts to 8.
The match could not have been any closer but clearly we need to practice tie breaks
