14U County Cup - Boys Group A at Wrexham - 5th 7th May 2012
The team singles order was Marcus Walters, Pierre Luigi, Ben King, Taylor Hursthouse and Eban Straker-Meads (as pictured, left to right).
The team got off to a great start with an excellent win against Yorkshire in a hard fought 4-2 win.Marcus beat the Yorkshire no.1 with sparkling, show-court tennis in a high level match which was more 18U than 14U. Recovering from 5-1 down in third to win 7-5, this was the match that effectively clinched the tie.
Having beaten one of the strongest teams, the second day proved to be an even tougher match against the North of Scotland who had two of GB top ten in their team and had beaten the strongly fancied Lincs the day before.
3-1 down after the singles, Notts showed excellent fighting spirit. Eban and Taylor won an exciting doubles 10-8 in the match tiebreak, then Pierre and Marcus put up an excellent fight including Pierre’s ‘shot of the day’ on set point, before eventually losing in the match tiebreak against the very strong North team.
Due to rain forecast on Monday, the team were then asked to play the singles of the next match. The mismatch in the two groups was evident when Notts beat the second place team from the group above West of Scotland 4-0 when Ben King fought back bravely to win in three sets. A special mention should go to Taylor, who’s win in this match meant he was undefeated at no.4 through the competition.
