Champions of Division 1!
What a great season this year – some very close and exciting matches, making new friends and reacquainting with old. A surprising but rewarding end to the season – played 5, won 5.
We decided to have 5 players in the team – 4 of us moving to this age group and delighted to have Sally Beeley , who has played for Great Britain, enthusiastically join us. All of the team members played in every match. Our first two matches were relatively easy games – a 3-1 win against Lancashire and a 4-0 against Buckinghamshire.
Next up were Middlesex (winners last year of this division and unbeaten for two years). After 4 hours of very competitive and hard-fought tennis we came out victorious 3-1. Beryl Jones, who had been struggling with injury, valiantly came in to support Sue Reesby in clinching the match for Nottinghamshire.
The following 2 away matches (Yorkshire and Northumberland) proved difficult due to different environments and court services having beaten the current champions the pressure was on to finish the season on a winning streak. A close win by 2 sets vs Yorkshire, and finally a 3-1-win vs Northumberland, secured our positions as champions of Division 1.
It should be mentioned that the last win was on 3 match tie breaks!.
The team photo shows us at Newark station waiting to travel to Newcastle in Northumberland for our last match.
Our final match of the season will be against Surrey, who are the champions of Division 1A, to decide the overall winner of the national county champions. This is at the end of November in Dudley.
Jill Shelvey. (captain)
