All British semi-final line up in Nottingham

Friday, September 16, 2011

There will be an all British line up on the penultimate day of the AEGON GB Pro-Series Nottingham.

With six of the eight singles quarter-finalists from Britain, Thursday saw a full house of victories for home players in very pleasant playing conditions outdoors at the Nottingham Tennis Centre.

The most comprehensive victory of the day was Richard Bloomfield’s defeat of top seed Mathieu Rodrigues from France. In a match lasting a little over an hour, the Norwich player was in commanding form to complete a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Bloomfield will now play Josh Goodall, in a repeat of last week’s final at Roehampton.

Goodall the 3rd seed, who is going for a hat trick of singles titles over the last three weeks, was leading Mehdi Ziadi 6-4, 3-1, when the Moroccan had to retire with a back injury.

Friday’s other semi-final is between David Rice and Alex Ward. Ward the 5th seed, ended Andrew Fitzpatrick’s good run, recovering from losing the first set to record a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory in a match lasting just over two hours, whilst 4th seed Rice beat his doubles partner Sean Thornley 6-2, 6-4.

There was consolation for Thornley later in the day, when with Rice, they reached the Men’s Doubles final with a comprehensive 6-2, 6-0 victory over Irish pair Sam Barry / Daniel Glancy.

They will play 2nd seeds and winners at Roehampton last week Josh Goodall and Marcus Willis in Friday’s Doubles final.

Play starts on Friday at 11.00am with the two Singles semi-finals. Entry for spectators is free.
