British trio advance to main draw of Aegon Challenge

Three Brits sealed their place in the Aegon Challenge main draw with final round qualifying wins in Nottingham on Sunday.

Nottinghamshire 19-year-old Josh Ward-Hibbert (pictured), George Coupland and Brydan Klein take their place alongside newly crowned Aegon Trophy champion Matthew Ebden, world No. 85 Alex Bogomolov Jr and world No. 100 Martin Alund of Argentina.

Ward-Hibbert held his nerve to save three set points at 5-6 in the first set against Jordan Kerr, eventually wearing the Australian down with a 7-6(3) 7-5 triumph.

It is the first time the big-serving right-hander has qualified for the main draw of an ATP Challenger event.

And he will get a tough induction, facing former world No. 38 Donald Young in the opening round on Tuesday.

“I felt the pressure in that last qualifying match when he was closing in on the set, but I worked hard to hold and then went on to take care of the set in the tiebreak,” Ward-Hibbert said.

“It is great come to my hometown and put on a great performance like that – to make it even better I have my family watching me.”

Both Klein and Coupland powered into the main draw, with neither one of them dropping a set along the way. Coupland got the better of three fellow Brits to win his place in the Round of 32, seeing off Sam Hutt, Jonny O’Mara and finally eighth seed Neil Pauffley 6-1 6-2 on Sunday.

He will next face Michael Berrer of Germany, who made it through to the quarter-finals of the Aegon Trophy at the same venue last week.

British wild card entry Daniel Smethurst faces another Aegon Trophy quarter-finalist in Belgium Ruben Bemelmans on centre court first up on Monday.

In men’s doubles action, the British wild card pairing of David Rice and Sean Thornley take on Australian’s Kerr and Chris Guccione.

Meanwhile, three Brits have made it through to the final round of women’s singles qualifying.

Briton Anna Fitzpatrick is the only unseeded player left to fight it out for a spot in the main draw. She will go up against third seed Noppawan Lertcheewakarn for one of the four spots up for grabs.

Brit fourth seed Amanda Carreras faces Miki Miyamura of Japan while Emily Webley-Smith takes on top seed Arina Rodionova.
