10yr old Phoenix Weir from Bingham won two singles titles at last week’s Nottinghamshire Junior County Championships tennis tournament, beating Connor Green from Attenborough 4-0 4-0 in the under 10 boys’ singles final (see photo) & Rhys Biro-Moore from Kirkby-in-Ashfield 6-2 6-3 in the under 12 boys’ singles final. Phoenix, who trains at David Lloyd West Bridgford and is coached by his father, Alastair, recently came runner-up in the LTA National Tour Finals in Bournemouth and has been selected to train in the national squads at the LTA National Tennis Centre in Roehampton.
Millie Mae Matthews from Ratcliffe-on-Soar won two singles titles beating Jessica Spencer in the under 14 girls singles final & Jasmine Ramsden in the under 16 girls’ final. She also teamed up with Jessie Beiley to win the under 18 girls doubles final.
In the boys under 16 & under 18 singles finals, Daniel Blackburn was victorious, winning both finals in straight sets, against William Caunt in the under 16s & Taylor Hursthouse in the under 18s. Daniel & Taylor teamed up to take the under 18 boys’ doubles title beating Rishi Kalia & Jack McLachlan 6-1 6-1.
Other successes were Aidan Law in the under 14 boys’ singles, Patrick Foley in the under 21 mens’ singles and Millie Wileman in the under 12 girls singles.
Kieran O’Driscoll-Pabla won two doubles titles, the under 14 boys with Gabriel Johnson and the under 14 mixed with Ellie Fitzsimmons.
In the mini tennis section of the tournament, Hugo Dunn won both the under 8 red ball event, with Jasper Riley runner-up and the under 9 orange ball event, with Indy Weir runner-up. The U9 doubles was won by Jasper Riley & Indy Weir.
The trophies were presented by Nottinghamshire tennis player, Isabelle Tyrrell, who recently won a gold medal at the ITF World Seniors Championships.
