Boys 14U County Cup report at Oxford

Tuesday, May 30, 2017

On Saturday 29th April the boys 14u team travelled to Oxford to compete in the 14u Aegon county cup.

Team; Gabriel Johnson, Puneet Sunner, Jacob Dunk, Aidan Law and travelling reserve Phoenix Weir.

Four singles and 2 doubles were to be played against each opposing team.

Due to a new format the boys were due to play doubles on arrival in the afternoon on Saturday with the singles the following day.

First up was Leicestershire who had already played a game that day and were used to the courts and conditions. Gabriel and Aidan lost out on a close match 7-5/6-4 at 1st pair and Puneet and Phoenix had their chances but eventually lost out 6-7/6-4/1-0 (7) at 2nd pair.   Gabriel, Puneet, Jacob and Aidan played out the singles the following day, despite some hard fought matches the boys couldn't get a win against a strong Leicestershire team resulting in a 6-0 loss.

Next up was Norfolk and despite a strong singles win from Phoenix the boys went down 5-1 overall. Unfortunately Jacob also picked up an injury in this tie.

On the last day the boys were up against The North of Scotland and they saved their best tennis for last. Gabriel, Aidan and Phoenix all recorded impressive singles wins leaving the score at 3-1.   After losing both doubles matches it was then 3-3 and a doubles match tie-break would decide the winners. Gabriel and Aidan showed no signs of nerves and pulled of the all important win to give Nottinghamshire the win.

A big thank you to Alistair Weir for helping out over the weekend
