Nottinghamshire County 65’s Men 2014 - Div 2A

Match No.1
Against:  Shropshire
Venue:  West Bridgford Tennis Club
Date and Time: 11.30am - Friday 23rd May 2014

Result: 3 – 2  Win

Team: Nick Shelvey – John Kingston – David Carter – David Hilton –  Ashley Looker.

Nick Shelvey won his singles match in a “game of two and bit halves”!
John Kingston played a controlled and considered game to beat their No 2. The two Davids (Carter & Hilton) fought a long and hard match losing in a tight final set tie-break.
David Hilton then played with Ashley Looker; both played well but lost in a long match not reflected by the score line.  
John Kingston & Nick Shelvey secured the team victory over Geoff Norton and a very tired Alan Durban!

Match No.2
Against:  Hereford & Worcestershire
Venue:  Malvern
Date and Time: 12.00 - Tuesday 24th June 2014
Result: 3 – 2  Win

Team: Nick Shelvey – John Kingston – David Carter – Neil Lucas – Ashley Looker

Nick Shelvey lost his singles match to a steady player on a difficult artificial grass surface.
John Kingston also found the conditions difficult and home advantage paid off for the H & W player.
Fortunately our doubles pairs fared much better and David Cater and Neil Lucas produced a good 6.2 6.2 win in their first match.
Nick Shelvey partnered by Ashley Looker had a close match against their doubles pair winning 7.5 6.4
David Carter and Neil Lucas then sealed the victory in a hard fought match 6.4 6.2.

Match No.3
Against:  Hertfordshire
Venue:  Harpenden
Date and Time: Tuesday 24th June 12.00

Result: Lost  1-4

Team: Nick Shelvey – John Kingston – David Carter – Neil Lucas – Ashley Looker

Nick Shelvey lost his singles match to solid and consistent player.
John Kingston also found his opponent a little too strong.
David Carter and Neil Lucas produced a good 6.3 6.2 win in their first match.
Nick Shelvey partnered by Ashley Looker started their match well but the opposition fought back winning in final set match tie-break.
David Carter and Neil Lucas then fought a tough match but unfortunately couldn’t close out the final set match tie-break.

Match No.4
Against:  Buckinghamshire
Venue:  West Bridgford Tennis Club
Date and Time: Friday 18th July 12.00

Result: Won 3-2

Team: Nick Shelvey – John Kingston –Neil Lucas – David Hilton – Les Hurst

Nick Shelvey won a very close match with only one break of serve.
John Kingston’s opponent was on par with their No.1 player and proved a solid worthy winner.
Neil Lucas and David Hilton won a closely fought match in the final set tie-break.
David Hilton then partnered Les Hurst in the second doubles but found the Bucks single player’s partnership a little too strong.
John Kingston & Nick Shelvey secured the team victory with a 6.1 6.3 result.

Match No.5
Against:  Bedfordshire
Venue:  West Bridgford Tennis Club
Date and Time: Friday 22nd August 12.00

Result: Won 5-0

Team: Team: Nick Shelvey – John Kingston –Neil Lucas – David Carter

Nick Shelvey won a very close match on a tie-break second set.
John Kingston put in a very solid and precise performance to overcome the second singles player.
David Carter partnered by Neil Lucas played some strong and consistent tennis to beat Beds. Doubles pair and then their singles players’ partnership.~
John Kingston & Nick Shelvey secured the team victory playing a rather nervous final set!!

Captain’s Comments:-

My thanks go to the “Men’s 65 squad” who all contributed to a very satisfactory season resulting in second place and promotion to Division 1. Special mention and thanks should be go to John Kingston for his dogged determination and commitment to the team and also to David Carter who played so well despite his “aging” and often painful body!!!
