Houdini (who?)…..somehow, possibly due to the ‘creative’ scoring system, but certainly thanks to the ‘never say die’ approach of the warriors of the over 60s, we’ve avoided relegation to ‘div 3 depths’!
Victors in only one of our five matches (Cambridgeshire) but with three out of four 2-3 defeats the maths worked in our favour and we live to claw our way through next season in Division two.
Were it not for the successes of N.C.G.Lodge (he dumbfounded four of his five opponents) our fate would have been decided early in the season but thanks to the over 65 team who lent us not only the ‘cocoon-like’ John Taylor but also the ever creative Gerry Radford …and…their international…yes, Eddie Fox played for us! Their collective three rubbers were an important factor in our ‘staying’; again, their services were appreciated (please keep your 2017 diaries open).
The importance of ‘new blood’ must not be overlooked, as captain my role was relatively easy this year knowing that I had enthusiastic and capable people to call upon; the services of Alan Philpott, Dave Watkins and Antonio Leccisotti gave the team its substance and bodes well for the future; ‘enthusiasm’ needs re-defining when any two of these three are on court together!
